The Syphilis Experiment in Guatemala
The Syphilis Experiments in Guatemala were a horrific example of medical research gone wrong.
Researchers intentionally infected hundreds of people with syphilis without their knowledge or consent, including vulnerable populations such as prisoners and institutionalized patients.
The experiments continued in secret for over a decade and were only exposed in 2010.
This tragedy is a reminder of the importance of informed consent and ethical research practices and the need to hold researchers accountable.
