This graph shows the increasing rates of melanoma, a type of skin cancer, in Connecticut from 1935 to 1999, and marks the introduction of various sunscreens.

The lines represent the number of cases per 100,000 people, with blue for males and pink for females.

Over time, both lines rise, indicating more people are being diagnosed with melanoma.

Key points on the graph show when different sunscreens were introduced:

  • Late 1940s: Introduction of sunscreens with Homosalate and glyceryl-p-aminobenzoate.

  • Early 1960s: Introduction of PABA sunscreen, approximately SPF 8.

  • 1975: Introduction of sunscreens with higher SPF values (20-35).

The graph suggests that with the introduction of sunscreens in the market the cases of skin cancer have increased significantly.
