The Best Posture For Sitting Based On Science

The image above provides a detailed X-ray view of the poor posture habits of the majority of people nowadays, highlighting several key issues:

  1. Forward Head Posture in Cervical Spine

  2. Elongated, Inactive Upper Back Muscles with T Spine Curvature

  3. Shoulder Internal Rotation and Shortened Pec Muscles

  4. Reduced Hip Flexion, Elongated and Weak Glutes

  5. Shortened Hamstrings

To counter these issues, adopting an ergonomic sitting posture is crucial.

Ensure your back is supported, your feet are flat on the floor, and the computer screen is at eye level. Regular breaks and stretches are essential to counter these effects.

  1. The brain-changing benefits of exercise

Exercise causes your brain to release neurotransmitters (most importantly dopamine and endorphins).

Neurotransmitters carry the chemicals used to trigger certain feelings and distribute them throughout your brain.

Let’s say, you feel good when you’re productive. Exercise gives you that feeling of being productive.

It also loosens your muscles that are probably otherwise tense from feelings of anxiety and depression while forcing you to breathe more steadily. This reminds your anxious brain that you are safe.

Check out this Ted Talk from neuroscientist, Wendy Suzuki to know more.

  2. Mindless Scrolling = Stress + Depression

The depression rate is the highest there has ever been and so is time spent on screens

Dr. Sid Warrier, a neurologist, discusses the connection between Mindless Scrolling, Stress & Depression.
